Allegheny Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in the nation with 300 acres and 15 miles of paved roadways. Over the decades, Allegheny Cemetery has become the resting place for Over 130,000 individuals. The rich and famous lie here with their splendid memorials, tributes to their achievements and their roles as community leaders and captains of industry. Humble citizens rest here as well, veterans of the American Civil War, victims of the great Arsenal explosion in nearby Lawrenceville, Scots, Irish, English, Germans, Italians, Slavs, all from the great workshop of the Western World. To that list can be added the veterans of other wars and the extended family members of those early personages. This fascinating roll of names and their life stories makes the Allegheny Cemetery far more than a final resting place. It is not a celebration of death, but a tribute to the lives they led.
