Why rely on rote memorization? This app helps improve vocabulary by using context clues, recognizing words with multiple meanings, and isolating root words and affixes. Understanding these core competencies is a requisite for a successful transition to middle school, and this practice-driven approach makes it easy for students to learn while easing the burden on parents and teachers. Stellar Vocabulary features original content and questions from Kaplan Test Prep.

Using the app, students navigate 15 planets, each representing a key aspect of vocabulary. They’re prompted to answer five questions on each planet with their extraterrestrial guide. The spaceship sheds light on correct answers and explanations as the student follows a suggested route through three screens.
Your Journey Begins
Students start by decoding nonsense words using context clues. Next, these space explorers will quiz their way through new nouns and verbs that they’ll encounter across the middle school curriculum. They’ll stop at a planet containing advanced vocabulary from academic disciplines such as math and science. Before leaving the first screen, students will practice context clues.
The Midway Planets
Five Midway Planets appear on a second screen. The first planet encourages space travelers to try out more words in context. They’ll travel next to multiple-meaning word questions, divided among three planets representing three levels of difficulty. The final planet on this second screen focuses strictly on distinguishing between homographs and homophones.
Before traveling back to Earth, students check their understanding at an additional five planets. The first planet represents the backbone of English vocabulary: Greek and Latin roots. Tapping their way through this third screen, they’ll practice prefixes and suffixes. Since students will be authoring more complex sentences in middle school, they’ll journey to a planet devoted entirely to questions about relationship and transitional words. The final planet represents important yet overlooked resources: reference materials.
The vocabulary topics represented by each planet directly align with Common Core State Standards for Grade 5 Language. Teachers and parents can also access a five-day lesson plan that integrates topics in the app with grade-appropriate informational text.
