Fort Dearborn was built in 1803 bedside the Chicago river. During the 1812 war the inhabitants were evacuated but later ambushed by 500 Potawatomi indians. Of the 148 women, children and soldiers 86 were killed in the ambush, The fort was burned to the ground.
